Chaos theory and complexity theory are developing frontiers in explaining complex structures and systems in critical states, from the behavior of earthquakes, avalanches and hunderstorms to stock market crashes and the growth of cities. The author examines these theories, explores how they fit into an ages-old quest to discover how the universe works, delves into their possible limitations, and asks what we can do with this new knowledge.
