Description
The crash of 1929 left a country--once reeling with optimism--with 25% of its citizens unemployed and at a near complete loss of hope. But in March, 1933, within weeks of his election, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stepped in with a solution: the Civilian Conservation Corps. As told by four veterans of this unique organization, The Civilian Conservation Corps, from the PBS American Experience collection, takes us back to this most ambitious undertaking, when in military-like fashion for a,0 monthly wage, men ages 18-25 were recruited and trained to perform specific tasks in the arena of natural conservation. This episode explores this bold introduction to both modern environmentalism and federal unemployment relief as it reveals the alumni's experiences of poverty, racism, hard work and the special brotherhood of the CCC.
