Description
In this 2010 Falling Walls lecture video, social and cultural anthropologist Shalini Randeria addresses the dynamics of accumulation by dispossession in India, with an extensive documentation of ethnographic case studies from various regions of the country. This lecture explores social issues including the expropriation of farmers, fishing communities, and slum dwellers; the destruction of hill villages; the curtailment of rights of nomadic pastoralists; and the erosion of liberties via new intellectual property regimes and biogenetic resources. Stories of everyday abuse where the state sacrifices justice for economic growth are highlighted. Randeria's notable scientific research explores the limits and the ambivalence of protests against dispossession by social movements and NGOs - and ultimately considers the citizens establishing boundaries between law and politics in quest of social justice.
