Description
Your nervous system has two parts, each containing billions of neurons. The central nervous system contains your brain and spinal cord, a fibrous, ropelike structure. The peripheral nervous system consists of thousands of nerves that connect your spinal cord and brain to your muscles and sensory receptors. Your peripheral nervous system transmits signals to and from the central nervous system for your reflexes, voluntary movements, and sensory information. In a peripheral nerve, each fascicle (nerve bundle) has hundreds of nerve fibers. In a neuron, dendrites (treelike structures) receive signals from other neurons and special sensory cells. These cells provide feedback on the environment - for example, on whether it is hot, cold, or painful. The axon sends signals from the cell body, where the nucleus is, to other neurons. Motor neurons manage voluntary and involuntary muscle control. Many neurons are insulated by myelin sheaths, much as pieces of electrical wire are insulated by plastic.
