Description
After the death of John Durbeyfield, Tess' family loses their house and travels to a village once owned by the blighted d'Ubervilles. While being relentlessly pursued by Alec, Tess writes an angry letter to Angel, pleading with him to return from Brazil. Meanwhile, her family, unable to find lodgings, accepts an offer by Alec, who lets them stay and work at his home. He then informs Tess that she now has no choice but to go with him and be his wife. Unfortunately, Angel has been struck down by a dangerous fever, and when Tess' sister arrives with bad news about their father, he leaves for England and sets out to find Tess, sparking off a chain of misfortunes.
