Description
This program builds on the fallout of the previous war and looks at some of the early films made as the film industry finally arrives. All Quiet on the Western Front & the Grand Illusion being the first to discuss the subject both being anti-war very unpopular with Joseph Goebbels. All efforts to avoid another global war and appease Hitler is being held high in the British Government but they are thwarted by Churchill's resolve and instinct. Nazism takes hold, as Hitler invades Poland. The early days, the Phoney War finally leads to surrender in France and retreat to Dunkirk. The story told in the 1958 film version and the Nolan spectacular of 2017, illustrating the people, the bravery and how this defeat was turned into victory with Churchill, inspiring the nation, as Europe looks on. The British film industry begins their war effort both creatively and in service, film stars like Leslie Howard at the forefront as the RAF prepare for the Battle of Britain. Films like Mrs Miniver (directed by William Wyler in 1942) tell the story of the people who are now all at war. In the USA Chaplin dares to confront the US censorship with his masterpiece The Great Dictator
