Description
Since its creation in 1906, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has helped ensure that the food and drugs Americans consume are safe. During the COVID-19 pandemic in the early 2020s, however, the FDA came under heavy criticism for moving too slowly to approve vaccines. This slow pace of approval, some charged, endangered the lives of many people who were infected with the coronavirus. Others defended the FDA, arguing that approving drugs and vaccines before they could be properly tested would put people's health at risk. How should the federal agency balance the needs of speed and safety? Is the FDA too cautious?
