Description
Trial and Error chronicles the enduring controversy over creation and evolution that has been contested in America's classrooms, courthouses, and state legislatures. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward J. Larson examines the often bitter struggle over the teaching of evolution in public schools, beginning with the publication of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in 1859, which erupted on the national scene with the anti-evolution crusade and the Scopes trial during the 1920s. The controversy was rekindled in the 1970s, as demands to remove evolution from the classroom were supplemented with calls for the teaching of creation science alongside evolution. In this newly updated and expanded edition, Larson carries the story into the twenty-first century, detailing the rise of the "intelligent design" movement and recent battles over state science standards. -- from back cover.
