Description
Medievalists and students carrying out research on the Middle Ages will welcome this useful supplement to the 13-volume Dictionary (published from 1982-1989). Nearly 320 entries offer new treatment of major subject areas that include women and gender, Jewish and Islamic hagiography, historiography of medieval studies, medievalism, and the Slavic world. Revised entries appear on Gothic Architecture (by Stephen Murray) and Gothic art (by Mary Shephard). There are new biographies, including those on Catherine of Siena, Johannes de Lignano, Otto II and Otto IV, and Rudolf of Habsburg. Increased attention is given to Islamic topics, including the Ottoman empire, bedouins, and the Kalila Wa-Dimna. Other topics include gnosticism, ghosts, genius, gynecology, violence, widowhood, and sexuality. Editor Jordan is at Princeton U. The volume is published under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies. Annotation ♭2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
