Description
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the US Supreme Court's decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, and Johnson (history, Northern Iowa) has done an excellent job at bringing it to life. Although the decision in this case was actually quite narrow--protecting the right to privacy in marriage--it has since been expanded to include a general right to privacy protecting the right to choose an abortion and decisions regarding consensual sexual relations by adults. This is the 28th volume in the "Landmark Law Cases & American Society" series by the University Press of Kansas and maintains the high standards of that series. Johnson provides extensive historical background, legal analysis, and discussion of the impact of the case in a lively, highly readable style. This work is suitable for the general reader on up to scholars of the Constitution, although the latter will likely find the lack of footnotes annoying; a bibliographical essay assuages some of that annoyance. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers and undergraduate through research collections. Copyright 2005 American Library Association.
