Description
This Book Focuses Upon the on-going corporatization of higher education as reflected by an increased dependence upon standardization and assessment. While the author has no quarrel with increased accountability and the need for realistic assessment of that which can be realistically assessed, the book suggests that much of the "accountability" movement is mired in hypocrisy. This hypocrisy is present both in those working within higher education and in those who pursue public policy initiatives seeking the greater accountability of others as they simultaneously seek to be removed from greater scrutiny of their own initiatives and work product. Those inside and outside of the academy are not immune from criticism within these pages, and the conventional wisdom which seems to hold that most assessment is good assessment is open to challenge. Ultimately, just as physicians must first "do no harm," this book suggests that the reader should consider assessment proposals with similar trepidation: before they can effectively imporve higher education, they must first do no harm. --Book Jacket.
