Description
This volume explores how the media (reality shows, sitcoms, television series), represent the major social classes in the United States. The author argues that the media is responsible for "misrepresenting" social class in American society. She maintains that the media puts more emphasis on being rich and famous, rather than realistically portraying the working class as contributors to the success of America. She points out how the media creates the "illusion" of social mobility and equality of opportunity. Furthermore, the media puts the elite so close to our lives that we believe we are close to them. She suggests that the media tries to create false equality by marketing elite consumer goods to the working class.
