Description
Within recent years, several major exhibitions of Homer's work have been mounted, and more modest books have dealt with special aspects of his career, such as his graphic art and his watercolors. The time now seems due for a fresh synthesis of these foregoing treatments in order to bring into new balance the unevenly accumulated information on different parts of Homer's life and career. Yet, the present study does not purport to uncover much new biographical material. Most of the facts of the artist's life are already available in the existing bibliography, and every Homer biographer has had to begin and end with the painter's cultivated reticence and guarded seclusion. -- Preface.
