Description
Before abstract painting galvanized the art world, eight American painters staged their own courageous revolution against the romantic ideals that had dominated American art throughout the 19th century. These eight artists, in their famous exhibition of 1908, opened the eyes of the American public to paintings of real people and real places--the industrial landscape along the Harlem River, the gaiety of Central Park, the working-class life in the city streets and city dives, and the flavor of the American landscape as exemplified by the Hudson River valley.
