Description
"The drama of the Golden Age (Siglo de Oro) is Spain's most extensive literary achievement. Paralleling the burst of dramatic activity in England, it encompassed in purely Spanish terms the moral, intellectual and artistic atmosphere of the time--the conflicts between reality and appearance, love and honor, passion and folly--leading to an admixture of the comic and tragic and to the invention of such universal and enduring characters as Don Juan and Pedro, the Artful Dodger. The Mystery Play of Elche, which chronologically preceded the Golden Age, is included here not only for the beautiful simplicity of its ritual and pageantry, but as an indication of the Spanish religious fervor which the later playwrights secularized and expressed with dramatic intensity." -- Book jacket.
