Description
San Antonio de Valero is not only the oldest mission founded in San Antonio but has the unique distinction of having been continuously occupied since its founding. So great is its fame as the symbol of the Texas fight for independence from Mexico in the early part of the nineteenth century, that we tend to forget its previous century of history. Therefore, the emphasis of this section will be on the Spanish Period of the mission's history simply because it is less well known and the early sources of information are not readily available.
