Ethics: A Short Introduction was written expressly for beginning college students and presupposes no background in philosophy. I have tried to convey as clearly and briefly as possible not only the basic issues in traditional ethics but also related in social philosophy. The combination of brevity an readability makes the book suitable for many different uses. It could, for example, be part of the reading assignment for an introductory course in philosophy, for a course in political and social philosophy, or for an interdisciplinary course in human values. This book was originally conceived, however, as a background text for use in ethics courses. Particularly, it is intended for ethics courses that are taught from the anthology or other group of readings dealing with specific substantive questions such as capital punishment, civil disobedience, racism, women's liberation, suicide, abortion, sexual freedom, and drug use.
