Notes

General Note
Appeared serially in the Hesperian, Sept. 1838 - Apr. 1839, under the title: Notes on Texas. Published in 1926 under the misleading title: Houston and Galveston in the years 1837-8. The author is referred to as a citizen of Ohio.
Bibliography
Includes bibliographical references (pages 177-219).
Description
Written anonymously in 1838-39 by a citizen of Ohio, it is the earliest known account of the first year of the Texas Republic. The author arrived at Galveston Island on March 22, 1837, before the city of Galveston was founded, and spent the next six months in the Republic. His inquiring mind and objective, acute observations of early Texas provide us a way of returning to the past, revisiting landmarks that have vanished forever.
