Description
"'Satire' said Swift 'is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own.' Over the past twenty-four centuries the mirror of satirical literature has itself taken many shapes. Nevertheless, certain techniques continually recur, and certain themes are timeless. Politics, the mismanagement of men by other men, has always been a target of satire, as has the war between sexes. The universality of satire is proved by the high development of lampoon and travesty even among primitive peoples; its long roots and its variety are shown by the persistence of allegory, fable, aphorism and other satirical genres in literature. Professor Hodgart describes satire at some of its most effective moments in Western literature from Aristophanes to Brecht. His analysis is augmented by a selection of prints and cartoons to show the similarities and differences between the literary and visual media of satire." - Book jacket.
