Description
"The art of the British sculptor Anthony Caro, one of the most important artists of our time, comprises an unusual body of work that reflects subjective and inventive sensibility. Although intrinsically abstract and inorganic, Caro's language of form is nonetheless lyrical and poetic, inspiring in the viewer a sense of vitality and excitement. In this full-scale monograph devoted to Caro's oeuvre, Diane Waldman, Director of Exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, offers a well-considered selection of his most exemplary works. Through the nearly 300 superb illustrations, the reader is permitted to trace the sculptor's stylistic evolution from his earliest essays in a figurative idiom to his most recent explorations in form, volume, and material. Working directly in the medium, Caro is the virtuosic master of metal sculpture, and whether his chosen material is silver or steel (as in the monumental Veduggio series), his sensitivity and instinct unerringly reveal the true nature of the material, not as a relatively indestructible surrogate for wood, plaster, or clay, but as metal itself. Furthermore, unlike many sculptors, Caro has been deeply involved in color, and a large proportion of his work is painted in bright, primary hues that lend an additional dimension to his art. But whether painted or patinated, Caro's sculpture comprises a highly intriguing corpus of works. Those who are familiar with it will be glad to have so much of it gathered here; those who are unfamiliar with Caro can look forward to a stimulating discovery." --,Dust Jacket.
