Description
Collection of statements by North and South American Indians, recorded in documents, letters, books and speeches, of their views and impressions of the white man's way of life. Each quotation is put in context by introductory text.
Description
The Indians' trenchant, vivid, insightful comments reveal strong perceptive reactions to the events they witnessed, and demonstrate their presence of mind even in the face of genocide. They are at once testimony and judgment. Introductory text puts each quotation in context, and each is accompanied by a drawing, painting, or photograph from the period. These show the subject of the quotation or the speaker, or illustrate some general evil - the depredation of the land, the sale of liquor, personal and tribal alienation - against which the Indians are protesting. Included here are the words - angry, ironic, poignant, humorous - of Pocahontas, Tecumseh, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Will Rogers (who was half Cherokee), of activists like Russell Means and writers like Jamake Highwater, as well as of more obscure Indians whose voices are heard for the first time. -- Dust jacket.
