Combining interviews and critical commentary, Newcomb and Alley explore the genuine creativity that exists within the American television industry. They interview 11 producers among them Norman Lear, Richard Levinson, William Link and Quinn Martin, who speak about the choices they make, the decisions they control and the compromises they must agree to at times. The authors put the producers' words into perspective by examining television's cultural role and problems of creativity. They argue that television producers render a deft synthesis of the moral and entertainment values of the masses rather than the personal vision of the solitary artist.
