Description
A biography of Nietzsche, focusing on his philosophical ideas and ambivalent attitude towards German politics. A student of classical thought and philology, Nietzsche was influenced by Schopenhauer's pessimistic ideas and his antisemitism. At first an enthusiastic Wagnerian, he later broke with Wagner and rejected his exaltation of Germany. Mentions Nietzsche's opposition to the involvement of his sister and brother-in-law, Bernhard Förster, in the antisemitic agitation of 1879-80, and his condemnation of their nationalist mania and the false Christian piety of Stöcker. Nietzsche left his publisher who was also involved in the antisemitic movement. Concludes that despite his hostility to German nationalism Nietzsche can be regarded as a prophet of militarism and the will to power, later adopted by the Nazis.,(From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
