Description
This study of the formal elements of Southern prose suggests that it is not the region's history that makes its literature distinctive but the unique structure of Southern narrative expression. Drawing on the work of Frank Kermode, Erich Auerbach and other continental critics, Kreyling examines some 30 works, including early romantic historical novels by Beverly Tucker and George Tucker, and novels by William Gilmore Simons, Ellen Glasgow and Faulkner. He focuses on the figure of the hero as he carries the Southern representation of reality through history from the early 1800s to the 1970s. He also examines a few nonsoutherners. ISBN 0-8071-1301-8: $20.00.
