Description
This is a personal memoir of a young white woman, newly graduated from college, who worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and set out to reverse, redress, and reshape the mind of America on the matter of race. The author describes the involvement of major figures such as Andrew Young, Julian Bond, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John F. Kennedy; the cold-blooded murder of the author's three fellow workers in Mississippi; the daily interaction among the organizers as they lived and struggled together, facing traumas, frustrations, and moral dilemmas; and the breaking of SNCC. She also makes a convincing case that the roots of the modern women's movement grew out of the civil rights struggle. ISBN 0-688-05772-1: $22.95.
