Description
"The New Jerome Biblical Commentary interprets the Bible through modern scientific criticism with respect, rigor, and clarity. This compact commentary concentrates on the cultural, historical, literary, and religious issues of the Scriptures and summarizes varied explanations of the Bible in use in the community of Roman Catholic scholars. It ultimately enables one to understand the "splendor of God's Word" in a contemporary approach that also respects its Christian tradition. The reader will find in this commentary an entirely improved work that is two-thirds new. The eighty-three articles are organized in two sections that are filled with an abundance of new stimulating ideas and issues. One section, topical articles, presents over twenty articles on the background needed for the easy comprehension of the commentary articles. Somewhat enlarged and often greatly rewritten, the topical articles now include one on Jesus and another on the Early Church. The latter touches on gnosticism and subapostolic church writings. Following the respective biblical books verse by verse, the commentary articles have in the other section been completely revised with recent insights and comprehensive explanations of the scriptural texts. As both Testaments are thoroughly interpreted, these commentary articles reflect the expertise of leading interpreters. Throughout, The New Jerome Biblical Commentary sheds light on the theological depth of the biblical World! New insights into the Bible -- the fruits of intensive research and investigation -- are set forth in this commentary: from archaeological information pertinent to the Bible, to historical data about current theories of dating, to revised historical reconstructions. Other outstanding features of the commentary are: New perspectives on hermeneutics, theological problems in the biblical Word, and themes in the Old and New Testament. Surveys about the composition of the biblical books. Interplay of faith and responsible biblical research. Italicized lemmata (the biblical phrases commented on). Running heads that indicate the chapter and verses treated on each page. Easy cross-reference to other articles through sections and numbers that divide the articles. Updated bibliographical guides in all languages." --,Back cover.
