Description
Sloan (political science, Univ. of Houston) has made another contribution to the ongoing reassessment of Eisenhower's presidency. During the late 1950s, Eisenhower was the object of widespread disdain among liberal intellectuals who perceived him as a do-nothing president, more interested in playing golf than in providing leadership. This was, in their view, in sharp contrast to the more vigorous presidencies of Roosevelt and Truman. As Sloan observes, Eisenhower's Keynesian-influenced critics believed that government ``could promote rapid economic growth, prevent recessions, thrive under moderate inflation, eliminate poverty.'' Eisenhower, however, had a more grandfatherly sense of the limits of the American economy, which, after the budget deficits of the last 30 years, looks quite reasonable. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.-- Jeffrey R. Herold, Bucyrus P.L., Ohio -Library Journal.
