Description
The school of musicians who lived and worked in Venice during this fruitful period is of special interest because it endured for over 150 years without a significant break. How that continuity was maintained - and the remarkable music produced in that time - is the principal focus of Part One of this study, which chronicles the history of instrumental music in the Cathedral of San Marco and throughout Venice's parish churches, theaters, academies, homes and palazzos. In part two, the author presents a history of musical style before Gabrieli, examines the development of the canzona, sonata and concerto, and traces the musical careers of such important figures as Giovanni Gabrieli, Albinoni, Vivaldi and the Marcellos. Her far-ranging scholarship provides a clear account of ensemble music in this important epoch, and a more intimate understanding of the musicians and composers who created it, supported by many musical examples and illustrations.
