The Workers of Nations: Industrial Relations in a Global Economy compares and contrasts the experiences of different nations around important developments, including the labor market consequences of regional trading pacts like the European Community and the North American Free Trade Agreement. The book also explores the international diffusion of new forms of work organization, and the strategies - ranging from corporatism to voluntarism - that nations are pursuing to keep their work systems competitive. It looks at groups of countries where unions are still dominant - as in Northern Europe - and those where unions are losing influence - as in the United States and Britain. It also examines countries where government and companies are dominant - as in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. Based on original research, The Workers of Nations examines the interconnectedness of politics, social institutions, and economic performance. It analyzes how globalization affects the contemporary workplace, and how workplace policies can make nations more internationally competitive.
