Description
"[A] biographical curiosity in this particular case seems justified, and we will endeavor to satisfy it as much as Hesse's work seems to demand it. Our narrative will clear up many otherwise obscure allusions and will prove beyond cavil the reality of the existential problem raised in Hesse's written works. But we also hope to make the reaer aware at the outset of the essentially aesthetic context in which this problem is raised, and of the essentially artistic logic which prompted Hesse to make use of his perosnal experiences and reminiscences."--From the introduction.
