Description
"This is the first English edition of Henrik Ibsen's letters since 1905. It contains- in chronological order- 275 letters, thirteen speeches, four prefaces, and one autobiographical fragment. Brought to light are 129 letters not published in the early edition, of which fifty have not been translated previously. These letters, speeches, and literary works form an intimate biography of the great Norwegian writer. Here are Ibsen's protests against the stifling conventions of nineteenth-century Scandinavia, which forced him into self-imposed exile in Italy and Germany for twenty-seven years. His letters show how far ahead of his time he was in his fight for social progress, the freedom of the human spirit, and the rights of women. Here are Ibsen's thoughts as he wrote his famous plays: A Doll's House, An Enemy of the People, Peer Gynt, The Wild Duck, Hedda Gabler, and others. Here is the playwright and thinker as a man, in letters to his wife, his son, his friend Georg Brandes, the famous critic, and his publisher."- Publisher
