Originally published in 1923 as a preliminary study under the title: A history of auxiliary newspaper service in the United States. In 1933 an expansion of the study was submitted as a thesis for the degree of master of science in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. This thesis was revised and published as a supplement to the Publishers' auxiliary on November 16, 1935 and the present work is a further revision. cf. Foreword.
