Description
The connections between organized crime and government are a significant problem in many parts of the world. Godson (government, Georgetown U.) presents case studies of the characteristics of political-criminal nexuses and efforts to fight them in Colombia, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, and the Ukraine. Political, economic, and cultural factors are explored, but the possible role of outside actors is surprisingly neglected to the detriment of the analysis. For instance, the discussions of Colombia in the 1970s and Italy in the 1950s inexplicably fail to mention the role of the CIA in using criminal organizations to achieve U.S. foreign policy goals.
