The second volume of biographies of African American soldiers in the United States Army, 1866 - 1917. This volume includes new biographies and revised biographies of some that appeared in the first volume of this title.

This book looks at the role of black troops in the Civil War. Examines the history of the movement to arm black troops for war on the Union side, including the origins of black recruitment.
