A humorous Yiddish musical set in Lodz, Poland. Khavtshi, the youngest daughter of a widower, is left with the responsibility of tending house for a helpless family of seven. Through this role she becomes their mamele or 'little mother.'

Set in the Polish Ukraine and New York City, the film traces the break-up of a family due to stress, poverty, the chaos of war and the difficulties of immigrant life. One of the last Yiddish films to be produced in Warsaw, this moving story focuses on one Jewish mother's efforts to keep her family together.

In 1948, Miss Daisy Werthan, an elderly, cranky ex-school teacher from Atlanta, crashes her new Packard through a retaining wall into her neighbor's yard. Her concerned son Boolie reasons she no longer is able to drive herself, and over her strenuous objections hires the gentle, tactful, and wily black widower Hoke Colburn to be her chauffeur. As a Jew, Miss Daisy is also the victim of prejudice, and she gradually overcomes her subconscious bigotry...
