Metaphysical poetry of the 17th century. Original French, German, Dutch, Spanish and Italian verse and their translations. Biographies of the European poets are included.

Argues that lyric making is universal across cultures, and uses the example of Shakespeare's "Sonnets" to showcase the human disposition to play with lyrical patterns.
