A discussion of character education and the history of character education introduces an annotated bibliography of picture books that show positive character traits. Each trait cites a number of book titles, summaries of the stories, how the trait is demonstrated, and other character traits shown in the story.

The idea of literature extension--using hands-on projects from math, science, music, drama, and art to expand on literary works--is an increasingly popular teaching method (with national initiatives sprouting up from Vermont Center for the Book and the Minneapolis Children's Museum in partnerships with ALA's Office of Public Programs and ALSC).
