A collection of all the poems from three books: First poems, 1946-1954; What a kingdom it was; Flower herding on Mount Monadnock. The poems in First poems are as they were in the original edition; the poems in the other titles appear in versions slightly different from those in the original editions.

Introducing twenty new poems and bringing together works from previous volumes, this collection of 150 poems, arranged in reverse chronological order, represents a half century of work by the distinguished contemporary poet.

Collection of poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Beat poet, and proprietor of the City Lights Bookshop in San Francisco. Ferlinghetti borrowed the title from Henry Miller's Into the Night Life, to describe his feelings as he wrote, a "circus of the soul."
