A book of 30 extracts from major political philosophers from Plato to Russell, on the nature of animals and their relation to humanity. The book aims to demonstrate the major shifts in thinking about the place of animals in society which have taken place over 2500 years.

This book has been designed to enable all students of political ideas to gain a fuller appreciation of the great works which form the foundation of the subject. It spans a critical period: from the turbulent era of the American and French Revolutions through to the calmer waters of the nineteenth century.
