A young orphan, Oliver is left to fend for himself until he is befriended by a band of young thieves who quickly train him in their craft. But Oliver is not content to be a thief for he knows that life holds great joys and true happiness cannot be stolen, but must be earned.

Having endured a miserable and brutal childhood, Oliver is sold to a local undertaker where his mistreatment forces him to escape to London. Once in the capital, he is welcomed into the seductive world of pick-pocketing by the criminal underworld and, before long, is in deep trouble with the Law. A young, unmarried woman gives birth to a baby boy in a workhouse. She dies, leaving a letter and a locket, which are stolen by Sally, a workhouse servant....

Sikes escapes back to London with a badly wounded Oliver. Nancy nurses him, determined to save his life. Mr. Bumble declares his love for Mrs. Corney and captivated by the promise of social advancement, she agrees to marry him. On her deathbed, Sally tells Mrs. Corney about the letter, the locket and Oliver's mother. Mrs Corney recognizes the value of the items, and contacts Mr. Monks, who she feels sure will pay handsomely for information and evidence...
